Consortium for Professional Security Officer Standards and Training

Our Mission and Vision

The Mission of the Consortium for Professional Security Officer Standards and Training (PSOST) is to enhance the professionalism of private, non-sworn, security officers who serve and protect their organization’s employees, consumers and visitors.

Security Officers play an important role in creating and maintaining safe places for everyone to prosper, including employees, visitors, and consumers who purchase products, or receive services in various marketplaces.

The process of enhancing professionalism requires commitment from professional security organizations, organizations that employ security officers and the individual security officers themselves. Commitment involves honest and open discussions about the current conditions and the challenges ahead. They involve battling powerful forces that want to maintain the status quo and resist the necessary changes. It will involve compromise, accommodation, negotiation, and consensus building among friends, close associates and skeptics. A commitment also involves funding, both for PSOST to provide leadership and education, and at the organizational level to support departmental training.

Vision

The vision for the Consortium for Professional Security Officer Standards and Training (PSOST) is to be the premier organization for establishing reliable competency standards, assuring top-quality training, and developing policies and procedures to support organizations who want to rely on professional standards.

Our PSOST vision for the future involves legions of highly proficient, productive, effective, and safe professional security officers, protecting and serving their organizational and community stakeholders, demonstrating pride in their chosen vocation.

Partnerships

Our PSOST success is built on developing and maintaining mutually beneficial partnerships with various public and private organizations, organizational stakeholders and professional security organizations.

Education

Educating organizations that employ security officers on the benefits of establishing and adhering to reliable professional standards is an imperative to effect the massive cultural change required to professionalize the security industry and its personnel.

This book identifies the flawed principles, policies and personnel decisions that organizations use, and it provides practical solutions to address them. The book covers two major themes: the misapplication of law enforcement community safety principles to private, free-market businesses and the use of risk aversive philosophies to their security officer’s activities. This book covers the principles, policies and personnel necessary for maximizing the effectiveness of uniformed security personnel to successfully mitigate potential workplace violence and create and maintain safe organizations. There is a strong need for this book since workplace violence prevention has taken on a new focus due to increases in workplace violence incidents and new laws requiring organizations to take a more serious approach to workplace violence prevention. Organizations rely on uniform security officers to create and maintain safe communities and play an important role in their respective workplace violence prevention plans.
